You are right on the money. Thanks for the Executive Office address in Mieamar FL. Their letters show a PO Box 1418 in Maumee OH with a physical address in Toledo OH; however, the Caller ID on my phone shows they are in Toledo OH (954-538-7533). These people will hound someone to *****---and this comes from someone (me) who was a collections manager for over 23 years until I became permanently disabled recently. UCB must be hard up to offer me a settlement-in-full (SIF) for $6,867 on a $30,000 Chase Business MasterCard!!! (P.S.: Beware any SIFS because the original creditor can notify the IRS all information about certain amounts [in my case, over $23,000] as a result of a cancellation of a debt on an IRS Form 1099-C, which means that I would have to pay personal income tax on the remaining balance, which would be an additional $4,600 to pay---not such a "good" deal, after all, huh???).

I am not an attorney and can not give legal advise but this is my oppinion since I have worked as a collector for 9 years now. YOU ARE RIGHT.... If you settle in full for anything over $400-600 they can and most likely will send it to the IRS as earned income. Than you are responsible for the additional taxes on it. BE SURE TO: ask the company about this and Contact your tax advisor PRIOR TO settling anything. get everything in writting (if they say they will not send it to the IRS as earned income get it in writting signed by the collector, manager, Center manager and as high as you can go) Make sure it will show as paid off and not setteled in full (SIF) on your credit... A***n get it in writting. a lot of collectors are sneeky because they want their bonus not because they want to help.

I am not an attorney and can not give legal advise but this is my oppinion since I have worked as a collector for 9 years now.Mandy, unless your son gave them permission to (or you are on the account) they CAN NOT give you any info, that includes asking for payments.... Check out the laws FDCPA (Fair Debt Collections Practice Act) @ WWW.FTC.GOV ..... If they are doing this illegally your son has legal right and he can contact FDCPA along with other agencies and can possibly have the debt paid off because if they are breaking the law his legal actions could include suing the collection agency as well as the collector (s), that are breaking the law, personally up to 2-3k each. Hope it helps

I am not an attorney and can not give legal advise but this is my oppinion since I have worked as a collector for 9 years now. A lot of companies ask for you to wire it but do your research first ask them to verify the debt. they will send you papers to show what the debt was for (IE... Capital One Credit Card, Dell, and so on) and to show that it is actually handling that debt. if they can not provide this I would check your credit report and dispute it if it is showing on there. HINT: if they can not show it is a ligitiment debt, it will be removed from your credit report and you can't be held liable...

Everyone, Liz is misleading about verifying a debt instead ask the collector to "Validate" the debt (which means prove that you entered into a contract with them, they can't because you didn't, which is required under FDCPA to collect)And not just "Verify" which means they just verify who you are and your info. creditboards.com can helpand if you really want to learn how to get rid of debt, research "accepted for value" and learn how commerce really works under the UCC (Universal Commercial Code)

They keep calling for information on someone we don't know. They don't leave messages and must not believe us when we tell them we don't know them. We don't owe anyone any money and they're calling for someone we don't know. We just blocked them from our phone list. This company should be taken over by the government and shut down.

A call for someone who no longer resides here from United Collections Bureau, Raphael. I returned the call after listening to a partial message and neither the person's name they asked for or our phone number appeared in their records. Of course, no apology nor****urance that the call would not be repeated.
