Bogus Charity for Childrens Cancer, they have multiple numbers so blocking will just get u a new call. They refuse to give required information to Agency that monitors Charities, which is a read flag. If you do not commit to at least a $10.00 card and to sell to your neighbors they get very nasty, they do not care if people they are calling are in financial need them selves. They abuse DNC rules regarding charities and call early as well as late. 800notes and whocallsme are two other useful sites that give good info about these numbers.

Charlene left a message for a Mr. & Mrs. Mashburn & she spoke so quickly she muddled the 919 area code phone number & it was unidentifiable, but my phone identifier showed the toll free number. I called the 8772188360 # & there's the auto-voice recorded message for Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation. The 919 area code # is the Raleigh, NC portion of the state which could be tied to UNC Cancer Research. Bottom line is 2 part, the 'Mashburns' don't reside here & we receive 2 or 3 wrong phone number calls a week, so we simply don't answer unless we know the number. ; o

I just got a call from the Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation (1-877-218-8360) asking for a donation. The solicitor sounded like she was working in a boiler room and was kinda pushy while asking for donations. I looked them up while I was listening to her. It seems they actually give very little to charity and have a high overhead. Crooks!

Reposted from another user: A West Knoxville-based children's charity is ***ning national notoriety - but not for its good works. The Youth Development Fund and its subsidiary, A Child's Dream, which seeks to grant the wishes of sick and dying children, are run by Knoxville native Rick Bowen from his West Knoxville home. Charity Navigator, the nation's largest charity evaluator, has placed the development fund on its list of "Bogus Children's Charities." The American Ins***ute of Philanthropy has named it one of the nation's 100 worst charities and graded it with an "F" in its December 2007 annual report. Forbes Magazine included the group on a list of questionable charities in its Dec. 10 edition, and in 2006 Fox TV commentator Bill O'Reilly aired a program on the Youth Development Fund, called "The Worst Charity Ever?" According to fund figures provided by Bowen as well as federal 990 tax forms, only a small percentage of public donations raised for the charity go to help children. In 2006, for example, it raised $3 million. Figures, however, show: -- Just over $102,000, about 3 cents out of every dollar raised, went directly to grant dreams for 52 children and their families, according to figures provided by Bowen. -- $2.5 million went for fundraising expenses, mostly to pay a Michigan-based, for-profit call center that solicited donors nationwide. -- Bowen's pay and benefits totalled $174,000. That was a pay cut for the charity director, whose pay package topped $380,000 the previous two years, according to federal forms. His compensation during the previous two years placed him atop a list of high-paid executives of low-rated charities, published on Charity Navigator's Web site, www.charitynavigator.org. The group raised over $3 million last year and spent roughly the same amount on the CEO's salary as it did on program serivces, according to Trent Stamp, executive director of Charity Navigator, on his blog site. As a nonprofit, the group paid no income taxes, according to Stamp. Stamp's office was closed for the holidays and efforts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful. Bowen's fundraising on behalf of children has earned him the ire of watchdog groups for at least a decade. "All these people, they don't mention one good thing that we do or any of our program services," Bowen said. The United Children's Fund, also headed by Bowen, settled out of court with the state of Minnesota in 1998, after it was accused of deceptive and misleading fundraising practices, a charge Bowen vehemently denied. The state of Michigan had also threatened a lawsuit after officials learned only 2 percent of the $1.7 million raised there actually went toward granting the wishes of terminally ill children, according to reports published at that time. Then Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe asked the city law department and state in 1998 to investigate the United Children's Fund, which later c****ed its name because another group was using the same name, Bowen said. The Youth Development Fund no longer solicits funds in Tennessee, Bowen said. The group's Web site, accessed through www.rickbowen.com, highlights information about a local golf tournament and drug abuse prevention educational efforts it says have been held at World's Fair Park to help children. "We haven't done anything in Knoxville in nine years or so," Bowen said when asked about these. Local entertainer and celebrity "Marshal Andy" Smalls serves on the board of the Youth Development Fund. He confirmed he's served on Bowen's charity boards for about 14 years. He defended the charity's fundraising practices. "Ten percent of so****ing is better than nothing," Smalls said. "Everything he's doing is 100 percent legal. That's what I'm concerned about." He added that Bowen, not the board, decides which families receive funds from the Youth Development Fund and A Child's Dream. Though the group does not publicize its services, families with seriously ill children learn about A Child's Dream by "word of mouth," Bowen said. On average, 52 families a year have a "dream granted" by the charity. They must submit a four-page application, with a doctor's signature to confirm a child has a life-threatening illness, Bowen said. When first contacted by a reporter, Bowen said trips to Walt Disney World made up 70 percent of the "dreams granted" by his group. When asked for details, Bowen said he stopped arranging for Disney World trips when the Walt Disney Co. refused his requests for discounts. Now, he said, he sends checks to the families of ailing children. "We give cash to these people," he said. Most families receive checks for $2,000, according to a list provided by Bowen. Dreams granted included shopping sprees, washers and dryers, computers, car payments and trips to Disney theme parks. In addition to providing funds for A Child's Dream, the Youth Development Fund's services include educational programs, Bowen said, citing a link to a drug abuse education site provided on the group's Web site. Information disseminated during solicitations for donations to A Child's Dream are also counted as educational under IRS rules, Bowen said. When not running the Youth Development Fund, Bowen has produced scuba diving videos and a booklet called "Florida's Best Diving." A photo of the booklet and Bowen in diving gear are displayed on the Web site he shares with the Youth Development Fund. Bowen has recorded two songs, according to the Web site, including the "Heisted Trophy Song" and "Shake the Sugar Bowl." The latter song was counted as a public service of the Youth Development Fund, its Web page states, since the song's distribution to Tennessee radio stations provided public relations benefits to the University of Tennessee.Caller: for-profit on behalf of "worst charity ever" Call Type: Non-profit Organization Caller: Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation Call Type: Telemarketer
