Victoria police issued a warning Friday after the number of reports of the “Ca***a Revenue scam” increased sharply. Here are some tips from the Ca***a Revenue Agency and the Ca***ian Anti-Fraud Centre about how to recognize the scam, and what you should do if you receive a call. What they say In the scam, someone claiming to work for the Ca***a Revenue Agency calls. If no one answers the phone, the caller might leave a message. The person says that a debt is owed to the agency, and threatens court charges, jail or deportation unless a payment is made immediately. The debt is fic***ious. The number that appears in the caller ID may be falsified. What they want The caller will try to persuade the victim to pay over the phone using a credit card or to purchase a prepaid credit card and call back with the information. The danger These calls could result in iden***y and financial theft. What you should do • **** up. • Do not take immediate action to pay the callers or give them any information. Verify that what you are being told is the truth. • Contact the CRA to confirm that you owe money, before providing any personal or banking information. • If you want to confirm the authenticity of a Ca***a Revenue Agency telephone number, call the CRA. The number for business-related calls is 1-800-959-5525. The number for individual concerns is 1-800-959-8281. • Report the call to the Ca***ian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If in doubt, ask yourself: • Is there a reason that the Ca***a Revenue Agency may be calling? • Do I have a tax balance outstanding? • Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? • How did the requester get my email address or telephone number? • Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? This number is not registered to the CRA, and has been confirmed by the CRA as a scam: http://www.cochranetimes.com/2014/01/22/watch-for-revenue-ca***a-phone-scam Watch for Revenue Ca***a Phone Scam Be on the lookout for phone calls claiming to be from the Ca***ian Revenue Agency as they could be scams to steal your personal information. Sandra and Wayne Scruton recently received a couple of calls claiming to be from the CRA that sounded su****ious to them. The first call was an automated message claiming to be an important message from Revenue Ca***a that then put them on hold. Wayne ***g up considering it was an odd call to receive, even though it sounded professional and call display showed GOC, which could be short for Government of Ca***a. Next the Scrutons had a call on their answering ma****e directed to Sandra. “The thing that bothered Sandra was it said, ‘Call us back and make sure you have your Social Insurance Number ready,’” said Wayne. “That was the kicker for me,” said Sandra, who contacted the CRA and received confirmation it was a scam as neither the incoming number (800-931-1026) nor the call back number provided (866-538-6181) are used by the agency. “”It wasn’t the first call they had received,” said Sandra. “They did exactly what they should have done,” said Joann de Waal, a communications manager for the government. However, just because they ask for your SIN does not necessarily mean the caller is not a CRA representative. Due to privacy concerns, your SIN could be a**** the security questions asked to verify your iden***y before they divulge any information. De Waal recommended ignoring all e-mails claiming to be from the CRA as they never contact individuals online and that it is rare for the agency to call anyone not expecting a call. If you do suspect you are being scammed, a caller from the CRA will provide you with their general inquiries number, which can be verified online or in the phone book. From there, they will direct you through the necessary channels. The CRA also recommends asking yourself the following questions when receiving a call: •Does this sound too good to be true? • Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? •Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? •How did the requester get my email address? •Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? [email protected] This is the time of year the fraudsters (generally operating from India) become most active (just after taxes are filed), as seen by the renewed activity of shills on this and other threads relating to fraudulent CRA calls.

Total scam, not an authorized number through Ca***a Revenue.

Lately I've been receiving calls from 1-800-931-1026 and 1-800-959-2250. Both numbers claiming they are from Ca***a Revenue Agency. (Separate numbers gave the option to speak in a different language of choice). Once you pick up the phone call, it will sound like a legitimate Ca***a Revenue Agency voice recording w/options to choose English or French. It redirected my call to an actual agent. Agent asked me to verify my name, birthdate and mailing address. In this matter, they actually had my old address, which I don't even know how they got a hold of. I didn't even tell them my old address. Then they proceeded to tell me that they are part of Ca***a Revenue Agency Collection Department saying that they overpaid me last year and now I owed money. They said that there was a re*****sment on my income tax return and that I owed $4000. I became su****ious when the agent kept on saying I owed money and I had to confirm a payment by tonight at 6pm. I s****ed arguing with him on the phone when he s****ed asking which bank I dealt with and s****ed naming the list of banks available in Ca***a even though I said I would not be making any payment until I know what is going on, and that I have all my paperwork in front of me. He s****ed getting impatient when I said no I won't be making any payment. He s****ed getting frustrated and I said if it was true, that I would call back. That's when I ***g up.

I received 2 calls from these guys one on the 15 of july and one on the 22 i don't believe these are real i have dealt with revenue ca***a and they always send mail first it's protocol and they don't call my cell unless they have to and then they request that i call them back on a land line for security reasons i am sure this is a scam because regardless of the fact that the government may know that we through this stuff out we still receive letters to allow us to contact them for our security and there are people like myself who actually respond to the letters
(800) 931-1026
It's a scam! i called REV CA***A and they said they always write first and call only if you don't get in touch with them after a while - the name the guy gave was not a CRA employee's and the number was NOT A valid CRA phone number. The the number called me just now. Same fake number showed on my phone. The prompts had c****ed. It sounds fake before but this time it was like they recorded the CRA answering script. The name on my phone was REV CAN the first time they called, now, with the same fake number, it showes CRA.TOTAL SCAM. Also, you have to wonder if the posters saying it is real aren't just people from the rip off **** calling us all.I told the guy I wasn't giving him any inof and he said "fine, you're running up interest charges." Yeah, like CRA would say that.
(800) 931-1026
The number is legit. I checked with Revenue Ca***a and they say they gave up mailing payment reminders, because "people just throw them away". Instead, they employ an agency whose job it is to irritate you with daily calls, thus hopefully drilling into your conscious....
(800) 931-1026
received a call from 1 800 931 1026.very su****ious because if it is revenue ca***a as others are reporting they would be calling from the area you live in not another province

Keep getting calls from these people, they never leave a message, and I don't answer 1-800 numbers, too many scams out there.
(800) 931-1026
I've also been getting calls from this number on my cellphone. No message. I called Service Ca***a, they verified that it is NOT the CRA and for me to call the RCMP Phonebusters and report it - which I have.

i've gotten this call like 10 times in the last two days, i called it back just now and as soon as i heard the phone ringing i ***g up ( i don't like answering the phone and suddenly be calling someone, especially not knowing who it is) this has been happening for the last month. unfortunatley i have talked to someone who said it was an issue from 2002 taxes. and i gave her info like an idiot..

(800) 931-1026
What's strange is that this number is not listed ANYWHERE on the web, besides the sites that complain about this number. I tried looking on CRA website and couldnt find it. Will call CRA tomorrow and inquire.
(800) 931-1026
Scammers! 1-800-931-1026. Claiming to be the CRA. First off folks, the CRA only verifies info when you call them. Also, by law they have to send you do***entation by mail if you owe CRA money. The call was an autodialer call as well, which CRA does not use. The person picked up the autodialer when I answered the phone. She asked for my DOB and SIN number. I told her she was not very good at her job, and that she should try making money legally. She said, "sir if you **** up, we will just keep calling back". I said...good, because I will continued to call you an idiot and keep on ****ing up on her...which I did. DO NOT give out personal information over the phone. EVER!
(800) 931-1026

(800) 931-1026
Never give out any information like this over the phone no matter what. If revenue ca***a wants to get ahold of you, they will send you a letter.

Legitimate Revenue Ca***a number. Called about GST arrears, gave out legitimate GST inquiries numbers (1-877-322-7849, and 1-800-959-5525), both of which are printed on the GST return forms sent by postmail.
(800) 931-1026
I keep getting calls from this number at least 4 times a day and no message is ever left. If this is Revenue Ca***a calling should they not leave a message so you can call back and verify that it is legit?I would like to complain but not sure who to call.

(800) 931-1026
Even though this number MAY respond as a legit Revenue Ca***a number the people who are using it are NOT Revenue Ca***a! They are disguising their actual iden***y by using this number. It's a scam known as Vishing where a scam artist(s) by using Voip technology will cloak themselves as a legitimate government agency or business with the intention of trying to con you out of personal information. Revenue Ca***a will not ask you for banking information over the phone. And if they were going to garnishee your bank account or wages there is a lengthy process they must go through prior to that and they will always (as is the LAW) mail you correspondence apprising you of the impending situation to allow you ample opportunity to take action before it gets to that point. There is even a poster on this board who said that she did not even owe Revcan any money but they called her anyhow. Why would they do that? Trust me THIS IS A SCAM! Revcan would never call and not leave a message. They would not ask for personal info like bank account information. I've even heard of stories of people who were asked for the SIN's and banking info of relatives of the people they were speaking to. Does that sound like so****ing Revcan would do?
(800) 931-1026
This is a scam, there is no government company that will call you over and over a***n..if they need to get ahold of you they will send you a letter especially if you owe them money. I know people that are getting these calls and they have also been victims of iden***y theft.
(800) 931-1026
Um, wait a minute. How can we even know if all the comments above are truthful? If it is a scam, the scammers themselves might be posting comments saying that the number is a real Revenue Ca***a number.
(800) 931-1026
They have been calling everyday for several weeks. I just called back the 800 number. A ma****e from revenu ca***a redirected me to an agent who told me it was a automated dialing ma****e. She offered to verify if I owed them money. To do so she asked for my SIN and I refused to give it over the phone. I still don't know what this is all about but I am sure I do not owe them any money.
(800) 931-1026
i just got 2 calls from that number. the first i didnt answer, the second i answered and i heard a ring and then ***ody was there, pretty wiired. who are this people???
(800) 931-1026
This number called me and asked for my SIN which I ******ly gave because I had a communication with Revenue Ca***a before about child Credit which now I am thinking could be posted by them as well to follow through this situation. They continued to call me and I never respond to them a***n. They stopped now but I still wonder if they are planning bigger move on me next time. How do I deal with this?
(800) 931-1026
I got this call today. They said, "Hi this is the CRA calling about a personal tax matter. Can you please verify your date of birth and social insurance number for security purposes." I said, "I don't give out that information to anyone." They replied, "Fine, call us back at 800-959-2256. You call call 800-OCA***A to verify this number or reference the www.serviceca***a.gc.ca website or the blue pages of the telephone book." I said ok and ***g up, checked out the website and.... THE NUMBER DOESN"T EXIST! (The real legit CRA number on the website is 800-959-8281.)I reverse lookup both 931-1026 and the number they said to call back 959-2256 and they don't exist. When reverse looking up the legit number (959-8281) it clear shows up as "Government of Ca***a."They called at 6:10pm while the CRA website says they close at 5pm.W***VER THEY ARE DON'T GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION! All the banks, credit card companies, and securities in general are constantly issuing emails that say they will never call you and ask you to verify personal information. These scammers are smart and can manipulate phone numbers with a laptop and a phone line.
(800) 931-1026
We are Tax Prep firm and being pestered by this phone calls EVERY SINGLE DAY. If you pick up the phone, you will hear ringing after 5 seconds. Why don't they make a direct call instead of making us think it's some kind of ****** call where you get charged if you allow someone on the other line to pick it up. *****S.
(800) 931-1026
Yes it is revenue ca***a,I verified as well with the legit revenue ca***a #'s. *** IF THEY ASK WHAT BANK YOU DEAL WITH OR WHAT STREET IT IS ON, ETC - LIE TO THEM TELL THEM A DIFFERENT BANK, THEY MAY BE TRYING GARNISH YOUR BANK ACCOUNT !!! *** As it is, I was being audited anyways so I have a direct line to an agent(who I went to school with) so it all checks out. This particular call center does not have access to your complete file, so that is why they(with me anyways) seem to not know things that the tax man should know, this guy anyways sounded like some joker from a telemarketing scam, but it was revenue ca***a trying to rustle up some funds that I didn't owe them anyways.

I had this number on my call display several times. I did call them back and was not sure if it was legit. I contacted phonebusters by email (no reply) so called 1-800-OCA***A. They answered on the first ring, which was strange for a government agency, but confirmed 1-800-931-1026 was a valid Revenue Ca***a collection outgoing number. Not satisfied, I called the 1-800-OCA***A number 5 hours later, had a different person check and got the same answer. Being su****ious of this whole mess, I called 1-800-959-8281, Revenue Ca***a's main number, spoke to a real person after following many prompts, who called the number while I waited, talked to the person there, got their name and ID number, ran it through their employee email list and confirmed it was a legit call centre. The Revenue Ca***a person also confirmed that there was no record of them calling me and I did not owe any tax. They say it may have been someone cloaking the number on the original call that came to my house, or a computer error. Either way, it is legit. And so am I. If you have any thoughts that it is not real, take the time to go through what I just did and feel better about this mess. I think I will still call Equifax....just to be safe.
