This is some type of scam to get money from people. Th caller alleges that he is your grandson and then tries to get you to put up money for them at some correctional ins***ution. Don't give them any money, just **** up and report the number.

We received one call from 866-***-6003 at 12:35 in the morning. We received another from 800-844-6591 this morning around 8:45. The messages were garbled and the voice response system stated that we would be asked to set up an account at the end of the call. We of course, did not answer or respond. How do we get them to stop?

On Tue Sept 14. 2010 I s****ed getting calls to my cell phone from ****446591. I did not answer, but I called them back on my land line, and they answered as Fusion Rewards. They wanted to send me a Visa card. I told them I did not want one, and to take my number off their list and the guy ***g up on me. I tried this a 2nd time and got a girl, and she ***g up on me too. I have reported this each time to the national donotcall hotline. Today when they called, they ***g up when I answered. So I called the number and the ma****e said correctional billing services, and wanted me to put in the above number. When I did that, the ma****e said it was not a working no. So****ing fishy is going on here

Today we've received about 8 calls from "866-737-3868" and caller ID says "Not Provided" but when you answer it says it's from Marion County Jail. No matter what menu selection you choose (accept/don't accept/block/find out who's calling you ... etc) it then states the charges will be $4.++. When we called the number back we were referred to 800-844-6591 for Correctional Billing ~ and all of their menus keep you going in a loop. We finally spoke with someone who gave us a number to call to find out the ID of the inmate that had been calling, supposedly from Marion County Indiana, but that number (317-231-8378) is a non-working number!! Tried many different numbers to get to the bottom of this and finally had to give our name/number to get our number 'blocked'. After stull getting calls, a followup call to them got us a different person who said we should NOT have been required to provide our name!! This person then just asked for our number and since then the calls have stopped ~ so far. Our phone company is centurytel and they told us they can't block any charges that may appear on our bill due to these calls, that would have to be handled by the Correctional Billing company ~ what a fiasco!! These automated systems aren't fool proof, as we learned by resear****g on the net, and they should be banned. BTW, when we refused to answer these calls, they just kept coming, clogging up our voicemail!! I suggest calling the billing outfit and spending the time to find a real person but insist on not having to provide your name when blocking your number.

(800) 844-6591 - November 23rd, 2009 5:00am
I don't know why anyone from jail would actually want to call strangers to get them to accept a call. I don't think it i legitimate. I have gotten the call to.

BTW...All correctional facilities either RECORD AND/OR MONITOR ALL CALLS placed by inmates in their facilities, except for Attorney calls which Federal Law Prohibits, where upon the inmates are generally provided access to phones that are not equipped with recording/monitoring devices.

This is in fact a Pre-Paid Collect Calling System used by multiple State, County and City Correctional Centers. The name of the business is: CORRECTIONAL BILLING SERVICES.When a person is booked into jail for any given reason, this is the system many Correctional Centers use to provide phone services to the person being incarcerated, detained, etc in that jail. It is the only way these persons/inmates have of calling family, loved ones, etc. to notify them that they are in jail or are being detained by some agency.Generally when you receive a call from any given number****ociated with a correctinal center, it gives the person making the call an opportunity to speak his/her name into the message which is then played back to the receiver.A familiar voice or name would indicate that this is a legitimate call and providing you want to talk to them and accept the charges, the automated message will direct you as to what you need to do to set up a Pre-Paid Account to accept calls from that person. The cost is between $50 and $150, depending on how much you want to put on it. Once an account is set up, then that person can freely call you COLLECT ALL BE IT, and speak to you if you you so choose to. There is also a means by which to BLOCK any further calls coming in to your phone from this number, by simply following the instructions on the automated message. The funds deposited will last as long as the charges for any such calls do not exceed the ****mim amount applied to the account. Any remaining balance left on the account is automatically refunded to your card once either A-180 days have elapsed since the last call from the correctional center, or B-Upon requesting a refund of remaining funds left on the account by calling the number provided. There is a rather lengthy process to go through in order to set up an account, as it is all automated, but if you have a loved one that may for some reason or another found him/herself in jail somewhere, and you want to talk to them, you will need to do it in order to receive calls from that person. Nowhere, to my knowledge, do inmates have access to phones where people can call them while they are in jail, except pre-arranged attorney calls.Regarding the PAY PHONE...IT MUST BE A SCAM statement...here is my knowledge regarding that.A- Although there are, unfortunately, inmates who, for whatever reason, do call random numbers in hopes of rea****g ANYONE, it is highly unlikely, and also they can be punished for it. If you receive such a call, and can confirm that it is such a call, my suggestion to you would be to contact the above number and see if they have a record of where the call was placed from and follow up with the appropriate authorities at the originating callers location.B- Many ins***utions use PAY PHONES for inmates to make calls out from, hence the reason for returning the number to a pay phone. These pay phones are set up to go only through this service as inmates cannot simply dial out and reach people at random. They are all collect calls, and the receiving party must set up an account prior to calls being allowed out.The automated system during teh original phone call will block the number called if an account is not set up during the original call, or if the party being called selects that option, or if a message ma****e is reached and hence no account is set up.In order for that person to call a***n to the number called, then the party being called will have to call this number to set up an account. If you are unsure of who called, such as the caller did not record their name for the automated message to relay during the receipt of such call, I would suggest you reverse the number and find out where it was from so that if you are missing a call from a loved one or family member, you can make further inquiries as to where and why the family member or loved one is being detained.A heads up, these automated ins***utional collect calling systems are expensive, especially if you are out of the local calling area; but...hey what are we to do. If we have loved ones detained somewhere wouldnt you like to know! There are other forums out there that mention available means by which to attempt to minimize such long distant collect calling costs, such as one such forum that I have read that suggests c****ing or acquiring a number that is local to the calling party. Some cellular services may do this, but it is highly unlikely that any local landline services would/could do it simply because of proximity and limited ability. I know that if you have a MagicJack phone, you can set up a number local to just about anywhere. Once you have a MagicJack Phone service, you can c****e the number once for free, and any additional c****es would cost about $10. The wonderful thing about that is...so what...the MagicJack usually runs just under $40, and for one full year of local/long distance US, costs just under $20/YEAR! I personally have 2 such phone numbers and for just under $60, they are paid up through the year 2014! Never a phone bill! I mention this because I am told with a local number to the one being called from costs merely pennies for a 20 minute call as oppose to several dollars for a long distance collect call. Some people can go through $25, $50, ...$300+ dollars in pre-paid phone charges and only get 20-30 minutes of talk time. Now, that part may be scandelous, but hey...I dont make the rules...the government and phone companies do.I hope and trust that this information will help some of you, I know from experience that it is tough on everyone involved when you cant effectively communicate with loved ones who are incarcerated in ins***utions for what ever reason and for how ever long a period of time.

I am receiving numerous collect calls from someone named Natalie calling from Travis County Correctional facility - the number on the caller id is 800 844-6591. Each time I ***g up.In the middle of these calls, at 12:51 PM I received a call from 512 879-5899 - the caller id also read Travis County - a woman asked for Kevin - I said she had the wrong number - she asked if she had reached 201 *******x - I said yes but she had the wrong number - she ***g up. How can I make sure that my affirmative response is not used as authorization for fraudulent charges to be billed to me?

This company sets up a service so inmates can call people. The company is legit and if you call them they will block your line so you don't get any call. Unfortunately the company can not tell you who the inmate is that's been calling. But they will block calls.https://www.correctionalbillingservices.com/default.aspx

The phone number belongs to Correctional Billing Services. It is not a scam. It is a service where the owner of a telephone can deposit money into an account as a way to keep an inmate from calling more than you are willing to pay for. Once the accont is empty, phone calls from the jail will not be able to go through.
