If you call the number yourself, it's legit Amex and routes you to their fraud department ("Account Security Group"). they will also send you emails that will route you to this number if there are suspected fraud purchases. It's possible a spammer could s**** this number so I would be su****ious if this number calls you, especially if you don't have an Amex.

Got a call from American Express from this phone number. I talked to the lady a bit who wanted to talk about "my card", but I've never owned one. Since I don't trust caller-id (lots of phishing scams) I, told the caller I would call back, ***g up, googled American Express, followed it to www.americanexpress.com, and found the customer service number from there: 1-800-528-4800. They connected me with the fraud department which confirmed that they had tried to reach me, and there was a fradulent card in my name.Summary? Don't trust caller-id from incoming calls or links from incoming e-mails. Always contact the company back from a known trusted contact. In this case, I used Google as my trusted source to find their website and phone number. It wasn't a phishing scam this time for me, but they are prevalent. For the person screaming that www201 is a fake address, when I followed the "contact us" link from amex's home page it gave me a www212.americanexpress.com address. The numbers are probably load-balanced servers. The page that I was at was secure (SSL) and had a valid certificate for "American Express Company" - another good way to make sure you're not being phished.

I googled this number after this came up. Ordinarily I wouldn't have called but thanks to all the reports here, I did call the number on the back of my card.Right after I entered my AMEX #, I received a message that they needed to verify a su****ious charge. Here's the best part: the charge had been attempted just 5 minutes before they made the call, so this was really fast service.I didn't have to wait a long time on hold, they put me through to a rep immediately, who stated someone had attempted to use my credit card on an online store. They canceled my card and are having a new one sent to me via overnight mail.If you get one of these calls, please call AMEX immediately. I think the recording sounds a little phishy but you don't have to call the number they leave on your voicemail; you can call the number on the back of the card. Also please note that the 'password' they ask for is your phone PIN - not your online password. When you call AMEX, you can set up a phone PIN for faster service in the future.

NOT IT'S NOT! www201 IS A FAKE URLat the top of the URL it says "www201" the actual American Express site does not have a "201" anywhere in any of their weblinks. -Notice if you click on the "Home" or any of the other tabs on the top of that website Darby is linking you to, it then redirects you to the actual AMEX website, to cast the impression that his original link is real.BEWARE!!!This guy is most likely part of the scam.
(800) 824-9289 - June 29th, 2009 4:00am
This is a LEGITIMATE number for the American Express security dept. It's listed right on their website: https://www201.americanexpress.com/occ/OCCSemiSecureFAQ.jsp#alert_definitionIt's part of their Irregular Account Activity notice process. Here's what it says on their site: --------------------------What should I do if I receive an Irregular Account Activity notification? Contact the American Express Account Security Group at the toll-free number advised on your Fraud Alert message or at 1-800-824-9289 to verify charge activity on your account. If you are calling from outside of the United States, please call collect 336-393-1111 and ask to be transferred to the Account Security Group.---------------------------I've been an AMEX customer for 25 years, and they have excellent security controls. I receive regular calls and emails from them checking up with me to ensure that specific purchases are legitimate. When you call that number back, it asks for your AMEX account number so that they have your details avaiable before you talk to anyone. It allows them to handle more phone calls. But the safest way to be sure is to ALWAYS call the number on the back of your credit card. They can tell you if the number you were called from is actually theirs or not. (In this case, AMEX will confirm this is their number).- Darby

Got a call as well. They actually left a message. Sounds VERY official, even suggested to call number in back of the card and that's exactly what I did. Sure enough, there was no security alerts for my account. The Amex fraud department was totally uninterested.I asked a number of times if they would look into that number but I did not get a response.
