Call came from 8004199782 but the caller left no message. In the past I have had an HSBC account but that was closed some time ago. HSBC would have no good reason to call me that I can think of. But, a***n, they left no message.

It is legit. HSBC fraud center calling about activity on an unused credit card.

HSBC fraud department

I called HSBC and they said there had been no calls from them to me regarding any suspect transactions. Not sure what to think but had my card cancelled and a new one issued (with a new account number as well). Safety first people. Don't give any info out unless you're POSITIVE of who it is you're speaking.

They also asked me for my data on a number not linked to hsbc on their website or anywhere else official. After calling the card number I found out it was legite and raised holy***** that they are training people to fall for phishing scams. As they set up the verification in the exact manner a scammer would. I am sure they won't do anything about this though. IDIOTS!

I got a call from this number and refused to give them any information but I did call the HSBC number for customer service 800-771-7363 and they told me that the number 800-419-9782 is indeed one of their numbers and it is legit. There was a attempt to use my card information that I did not make. They connected me to the Fraud division and canceled my account and going to issue a new card. I thought this was a bad phone call but it is real. This is a good thing for our protection so don't ignore it.

This just happened to me. I first called the number from the email and was very uneasy about it, so I googled the number and found this site. I immediately called the number on the back of the card. I asked if the 1-800-419-9782 number was legit and they****ured me it was. The real question is why was there a fraud block...I verified my last three purchases. Sounds like it is happening to everyone else here. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry.

actually I received a call too from that number. so I called orchard bank which is hsbc directly and they told me there was activity on my card so they wanted to verify. it turns out it was me. I was trying to purchase so****ing on the internet but my it kept saying my # was wrong so I tried it several more times because I knew it was right and my account got locked. it looked su****ious because I tried it several times at different sites. so if you have concerns about so****ing like that if you feel uneasy about calling the # back call the bank or credit card directly.

Everybody is right, it's best to call the number on your card. But this is a legit number to HSBC's fraud department. I called both this number first, then the number on my card. The second call verified the first number was them.
(800) 419-9782 - May 12th, 2009 4:00am
Call was legit regarding a hold on my account. Called the number on my card instead and they got me to the fraud department. Spoke to a woman there who verified 2 transactions that they had flagged, neither of which were for a lot of money. Told her that the charges were legit. Account was cleared for usage. No efforts on HSBC's part to sell me any unnecessary **** (card protection, etc.). Took all of 7 minutes to get the matter resolved.Call the number on your card if there are any issues. DO NOT call the 800-419-9782 number........

I did have some fraud on my card but called the number on the back of the card to fined out. I recieved a bogus e-mail. It looked funny so I googled the number and got this page. I also had a number for calling from overseas and got a truly weird page in India I believe.

I have caller ID, I did not answer this call, is there anyway these phone #'s can be stopped, either by phone co. or FCC?
(800) 419-9782 - November 30th, 2008 5:00am
i called the number back and got an automated sequence asking for information, the same automation as from the number on the back of my card. i ***g up right away and called my card number. Upon checking my account there were indeed pending charges that I didnt make. I immediately canceled the card. Like someone above said, why risk it? if it doesnt match the number on your card, just call that one and go from there.

Also got a call from this number today. Called it back, s****ed smelling fishy when the operator said their was no problem with the account, transferred to another operator which spoke decent "English" not like the usual overseas call center accents. The personal info asked was within limits, however called HSBC number from back of card and canceled the card, just to be on the safe side.Good number or not, the internet search leans towards a "Phishing" scheme. First time any online purchases have ever generated any repercussions. Knock on Wood

I received a call from this number today. I called the number on my HSBC statement. They told me that they did not have a recorde of the either this number or the callback number given by the caller's voice response system. Also, said that they would not contact anyone concerning a problem with the card's security in this manner. If there was a problem, a personal caller would ask the cardholder to call the number on the back of the card for further information concerning a security breach. The caller at this phone number is "Phishing" for more information. DON'T CALL THEM BACK!
(800) 419-9782 - November 8th, 2008 5:00am
Nov. 8, 2008 - I received a call from this number as well****erting that my credit card number had been compromised. I called HSBC using the number on the back of my card, and they validated that the original call was legit and was from their fraud prevention department.
(800) 419-9782 - October 6th, 2008 4:00am
Claim to be HSBC ascertaining fraudulent use on my account.Began October 6, 2008. They are leaving messages on my phone and also emailing me. I think the fraud occurs once you call the legitimate number on the back of your credit card and tell them that someone contacted you. HSBC is not trying to contact you, this number is phishing for your information. Once you call the legit number HSBC then believes there has been a breach of your security.

wanted credit card and SS#
(800) 419-9782 - September 5th, 2008 4:00am
This is valid - this happened to me 2 days ago - they told me there were 2 attempts made on my card that we for 6k and 8k. As a result they canceled the card and re-issued me new ones - but they asked me to verify my address - and I did - and then I realized I probably shouldn't have. Well - I called the number on the back of my card and this did in fact occur - they said the 9782 number is from California from the fraudulent dept and they do verify the address for mailing purposes
(800) 419-9782 - September 3rd, 2008 4:00am
I got a call from that number today -. I called the number on the back of my card. It turned out that someone racked up around $300 on my credit-card. They had to cancel my existing card and issue me a new card..i.e, this number is legit. And like Kris posted above, it is always best to call the number behind the card instead of the number they called you from.
(800) 419-9782 - August 25th, 2008 4:00am
Definitely 100% real... answer it. its HSBC calling to make sure charges you make on your card are correct.
(800) 419-9782 - July 31st, 2008 4:00am
Just recieved a call from this number for the second time today. The first time they did not leave a message. Second time it was a recorded message asking me to call and verify some "Important Information".
(800) 419-9782 - June 29th, 2008 4:00am
Valid, but I do still recommend calling the phone number issued on the back of the card as well.
(800) 419-9782 - June 16th, 2008 4:00am
It was valid. Somebody clonned my c card and the fraud division detected timely. I did not call this number, I used the one on the back of my card. But anyway the representative explained that it was due to fraud.
(800) 419-9782 - June 13th, 2008 4:00am
I got this number in an email also, claiming they were investigating fraud on my credit card. I called it and they s****ed phishing for info, so I ***g up and called my credit card company. There was indeed a fraud hold on my card, but whether this email was legit or not, well, why chance it. Just call your card company using the number on your card.
(800) 419-9782 - June 12th, 2008 4:00am
caller left message which I has trouble understanding (think accent and speaking very quickly) but after listening to it several times, got the number and called. She refused to say who she was until I gave her the 16 digit number from my credit card, I ***g up after refusing to give my number to someone who would not identify themselves!
(800) 419-9782 - June 9th, 2008 8:52pm
Keep calling.
(800) 419-9782 - May 13th, 2008 4:00am
This number was in an email saying that there was recent unusual activity on my account. There was nothing new on my account and a search of their website resulted in no matches for the phone number or the department which signed the email. I would not trust it.
(800) 419-9782 - May 7th, 2008 4:00am
Call was legit. Fraudulent charges for fuel on my card. HSBC - However, never call the number left for you - instead call the number on your card (always!) and verify their call first.
(800) 419-9782 - May 2nd, 2008 4:00am
Caller said they had important information regarding my account.
(800) 419-9782 - April 18th, 2008 4:00am
Fraud for sure. The real HSBC says they did not call me, but that my account WAS compromised. Probably by w***ver wanted me to call this number, I'd think. Call the number on your card, not the one you do not know.
(800) 419-9782 - April 15th, 2008 4:00am
Fraud Alert - They claim to be my credit card company but are fishing for information. Called my credit card company and they said it wasn't one of their numbers. Also, I called this number back and asked the person who answered what company it was. He hesitated and then said Superbook.com. I wouldn't trust anyone who says this is a legitimate call.

This is legitimate. I, too, had a fraudulent charge on my account and they needed to issue a new GM Mastercard.
(800) 419-9782 - February 23rd, 2008 5:00am
i got a call and it was about fraud on my card. it turned out to be legitimate, and it was because su****ious charges were showing up on my card. they left a msg w/a callback # -- the one above -- so it was good to call them. one way that i can more or less confirm that what they were saying was true was that i was not able to access my credit card acct online and this was because hsbc had put a block on the account until they heard back from me.
(800) 419-9782 - February 18th, 2008 5:00am
